We just released a new photo editing / upload tool @ studivz / meinvz / schuelervz based on the ideas mentioned in my last post.
I also wrote a more detailed post on our company blog about the technology I used.
The next step I'm currently taking is to build a hybrid solution using one of the following:
built-in html5 features; gears; flash; silverlight; native Client;
